The World is More Alive Than We Think
Most of us like to believe that life unfolds according to plans.
We set goals. We create strategies. We organize our calendars. We establish processes. We make decisions intended to produce predictable outcomes.
And yet life has a habit of surprising us.
A conversation changes a relationship. A chance encounter alters a career. A small act of kindness lifts an entire team. A community develops a character that no one person designed.
In this week’s episode of Unlocked, I sat down with Cynthia Kurtz, author of Confluence, to explore a fascinating idea: our lives are shaped not only by intention, but also by emergence.
It is the path worn across a grassy field because enough people chose to walk there. It is the crowd that suddenly moves as one. It is the culture that develops inside an organization. It is the unwritten understanding that forms between people who work together over time.
What struck me most about our conversation was not the complexity theory behind these ideas. It was the reminder that many of the most important things in our lives are not created through command and control. They emerge through relationships, interactions, observations, and countless small decisions made every day.
Cynthia describes emergence as something that has always been with us. Long before we had modern management theories, people were learning to observe patterns, adapt to changing circumstances, and work with forces larger than themselves.
The conversation challenged me to think differently about leadership as well. We often assume that leaders are responsible for creating outcomes. Yet some of the most effective leaders may be those who learn to recognize emerging patterns, encourage healthy interactions, and create conditions where positive outcomes can develop naturally.
There was another lesson that stayed with me.
We spend much of our lives trying to gain certainty. We want guarantees, predictions, and control. Yet the world around us is constantly reminding us that uncertainty is not a flaw in the system. It is part of the system.
Perhaps wisdom lies not in eliminating uncertainty, but in becoming more comfortable with it.
Resilience is described as our ability to respond to the unexpected. But perhaps part of resilience is also learning to recognize that the unexpected is not an interruption of life—it is part of life itself. Cynthia also describes one of the techniques she uses with organizations to help them see the unexpected as part of emerging patterns.
As Cynthia observed, we cannot control emergent patterns. We can influence them. We can pay attention to them. We can learn from them. We can participate in them thoughtfully.
And sometimes, simply learning to see them changes everything.
Join us for a conversation that explores complexity, curiosity, resilience, relationships, and the surprising patterns that shape our lives every day.
